Excel Opens in background when Outlook is opened

Basically the same as the header. Whenever I open Outlook 2003, Excel is opened in the background. This issue severly degrades the performance of my pc for some reason. Is there anyway to shut this off?

Take a look in tools - options - other - default programs to see if you see anything that might do this.

The answer is "42"

That option does not appear in the other tab of the options menu. Any other suggestions?
