Our environment is SBS2003 with XP clients.
I have a single user that on occasion when trying to open excel files from a network folder can only open as read only. All other users can open the same file with write privileges.
He is able to rename the file and save into the same folder so I'm thinking it's not a permissions issue.
Also if another user has the file open and he tries to open the same file he does not get any type of notice.

Thanks in advance

Well it makes sense that on occasion when the file is opened by someone else, the user would only be able to open a "read-only" copy.

Is this shared folder located on a file server or is it being shared by a domain computer? Are all users accessing this folder domain users?

I agree with you on when other users have the file open, however this is occurring even when he is the only person working in the file.

This is a shared folder on a file server with all users being domain clients.

You sure no code has the file open? Any system freeze-ups or such involved at all?

First off I was wrong in that the file is actually in a shared folder on our SBS box (Domain Controller).

KJV1611-Not that I know of. I can go to any other machine and open the file as usual without any issues.

He is able to rename the file and save into the same folder so I'm thinking it's not a permissions issue.

So, to test if it's a folder permissions issue, can the user open other workbooks on the same network share w/o being read-only?

Otherwise, I can't think right off hand of there being any user-based security in Excel, aside from anything code that might be set to run when the workbook is opened. Are you certain there is no VBA code in the workbook that might look at the user credentials, and act accordingly?

Yes. He can open a blank copy of the same worksheet within the same network share folder with write privileges.

One thing I have found is that if he opens a file from the share folder and it is not marked read only on his side is If I open the same file from another user it does not give the "this file is in use by:______" message.
Now on that same note if he opens a file from a shared folder on our file server and then I try to open the same file from the file server I will receive the in use message.

Wondering if perhaps it's a user/DNS issue on our SBS box.

There is VBA code on the excel workbook but only for vlookup and protect/ unprotect all sheets. Teh workbook itself has no passowrd/ security assaigned.
