I have a home user who supposedly has excel, I havent seen his laptop yet.

he receives an excel worksheet via email, works on it, then emails it back.

when the person gets it back, the icon for the worksheet is the one where windows doesnt know what it is.

if you open it up in excel anyway, it opens fine, and apparetnly without any real issues.

what could the home user be doing to cause this?

First guess would be different versions of Excel....

So the file type isn't associated with Excel yet.

In the offending user's Excel, go to Tools > Options > Transition and see what is listed for "Save Excel files as:".

If the recipient (who gets the unrecognized file) right clicks on the file and selects Properties, what does it say next to "Type of File"? What is the three letter extension for the file? (.xls, .csv, .txt, etc.) When choosing to open the file with Excel, they can tic the box beside, "Always open this file type with this application" (or whatever the exact message is).

I'v seen that sometimes file extension was lost when sending via mail. In this case it was necessary to add proper extension manually.
