I've created a few excel macros using the built-in vb editor and saved them to my personal spreadsheet (I think that's what you call the Excel equivalent of the Normal.doc template- I'm using a German version here so I'm not 100% sure). The problem is that I only seem to be able to access the Macros when this spreadsheet is open. This doesn't happen with recorded macros.

When you record a macro, you get a window asking you for the macro name and description. For Store Macro In: entry, there are several choices. If you choose Personal Macro Workbook, the macro is stored in Personal.xls - a hidden file which is saved in Excel starup directory and automatically loaded when you launch Excel Then the macro will always be available for any workbook you use.

The only problem I've ever had with using functions from my PERSONAL.XLS workbook is when I called up UserForms. You have to make sure to reference them properly when invoking them from other workbooks. Regular macros have never given me any problems, though.
FYI, any workbooks stored in the
Code:
"Microsoft Office\Office\XlStart"
folder will load up automatically when Excel starts.

One other thing,...once your personal.xls is working, you can hide it, so it activates without being seen for a cleaner look.

From the window menu click hide.....
