Excel linking problems between different servers

I am having a problem with links between different excel files on different servers. The links revert back to the pathname of the server when I open the spreadsheet. The linking of updated date is then inconsistent.

e.g K:\excel.xls
becomes \\atl05\finance\excel.xls

Has anyone seen this before?
I am having to do a macro'd edit/replace upon opening to make sure that data is correct.

Yes, I have seen this before. The reason I think is that a locally mapped drive for you could quite possibly be different for someone else on the network, so the link will change to reflect the global pathname automatically. So therefore it works for everyone on the network not just you.

In your example K:\excel.xls could also be Z:\excel.xls in another users view on the network. To put the global pathname \\atl05\finance\excel.xls instead should give a more inconsistent working environment. You shouldn't be having problems with this and you should not have to change it everytime through a macro.

I'm sure you can explicitly name the link without it changing to something else, eg 'K\:excel.xls' should not change between the quotes. This works on my network.

When I open the two spreadsheets that are linked via the \\ATL05 the link does not shorten itself within the cell as per usual when a linked file is open. It also does not automatically update.
Have you had this problem on your servers?
Is it a glitch within excel?

Sorry John, my linked files work fine. We are running an NT4 platform across our servers. The pathname do shorten themselves when the linked file is open and an automatic update works as it should. We do run an old version of Excel (97) - I do know the newer versions of Excel do handle linking better than our version. Maybe the glitch is not in your version of Excel but on your configuration to the network, eg drive (server) mapping.

Sorry I can't help anymore. I think you have stunned the VBA gurus aswell.
