Here is the scenario.

MC Office Professional Plus 2013
Shared xlsx file on network drive
Some cells have data connections to get data from other files
These "Other Files" are on the Sharepoint server and the "Formula" in the Shared file cell looks like this
Under "Data", "Edit Links" Excel considers this a "Remote file" type

When the Shared Network file is opened Excel asks...

"This workbook contains links to one or more external sources that could be unsafe.
If you trust the links, update them to get the latest data. Otherwise, you can keep working with the data you have.
"Update" / "Don't Update" / "Help"

The user selects "Update", works with the file, then closes the file.

The issue is that the owner, of the linked Excel file on Sharepoint, gets a "file locked by user" message when trying to update that file. Even though the user of the Network file closed Excel properly.

Why is Sharepoint creating a lock file, and not releasing it?

Any help is appreciated.
