Confused??

Let say that I try to open a file named, "Boston US Expense Spreadsheet." When I double click on the file, Excel will open but tell me that, "Boston.xls - Could not be found," I click OK and then it tells me that, "US.xls - Could not be found." This continues for the entire file name, but it will then open the file.

Why is it taking the full file name and breaking it up into multiple files when trying to open the file in question.

Thank you.

The fix requires a change in the "Folder Options" settings for .xls files.

It's possible to edit the setting manually, but depending on your operating system, the easiest way to make the change is to hold down the shift key and right-click on the file name. Then browse to the location of Excel to designate that as the application to associate. Tick "always use..." and click ok.

If you have trouble, post back with what OS you are using (Win 98 / XL / ???) and you can get more specific instructions.

I am using XP, but I'm not sure this is the fix. To begin with it is already set to "Always Use," in the folder options.

Is there a chance the path of all the directory/folder names from the root of the drive to the last letter of the Excel file name exceeds 255 characters? A long shot, but it is a known limitations.

This has something to do with the "LFN" or Long File Name ability I would guess. If the file is located on your PC hard drive, vs. on a network or remote drive, that would be a clue. If Excel is the only application that has trouble opening files from that place they reside, that too would be a clue.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess the files are being accessed on a remote system, possible via VPN? If by chance I am close, I still have no idea what to do, but whomever runs those network resources will probably turn red in the face when they find out
