I am trying to create a new list from an Excel file. When the iport is complete most fields are "Single line of text" or "Multiple lines of text". I want to be able to change the field type of some fields to "Choice" but I cannot find a way of doing so. Can anyone help..?

It would be most appreciated..

Hello,

when you have imported a list one of the columns will automatically be the "Title" column (even though it is not namned title). The title column is the one where you wil have the edit dropdown possibilities when looking at the list. You can also check which one it is by:

1. Click Documents and Lists
2. Chose your list
3. Click modify settings and columns on the left
4. Under views, click the view you have (default it will be all items). There you will see "name of column" (linked to item with edit menu). This column is the "Title" column and the type of that column can't be changed from the SharePoint web interface.

It might be possible to do something in Frontpage but I am not sure how though.

All the other columns you have you should be able to change the type on.

If you attempt to play around with Frontpage make sure you have a working backup of the site before making any changes it is really easy "breaking" a site when working with it in FrontPage (I know that from experience :) )

Cheers,
Thomas

Thanks for your response Thomas but I am not sure this is the answer.

I need to change an existing field's type. I have several fields that are Multiple Lines of text and Single Line of text that need to be changed to a single value drop down box (or Choice).

Still need help......

Hello,

No that was not the answer, but ome fields you will not be able to change. And I wanted to find out if you were trying to change one of those fields that sharepoint "locks up".

If you want to change the type of a column field to choice you do that by going to:

Documents and Lists -> Click on the list you want to change -> On the left side under Actions, select Modify settings and columns -> On the Customize page under Columns, click the Column name you want to change.

But as I said in my previous post, some of the fields (for example the one having "Linked to item with edit menu") you will not be able to change the field type.

When you create a list or import a list, atleast one of the columns will not be editable more than changing for example the number of characters you can enter (if it is a single line tex or multiple lines of text)nor can it be deleted.

Regards,
Thomas
