I have been unsuccessful in all attempts within in Excel. Every time I try to reference the variance column, it adds either a bar or a pivot line, which is not the appearance I want.
I have now moved my graphs over to Snag It to add the text manually.
Forgive my ignorance, but I am not sure how to add a text box within a chart and / or not clear on what you mean by a line against the column. Would this be in a text format, if so can you tell me how to do that?
Budget (100), Actual (80), Variance 20
Col 1 Column 2
Budget 100
Actual 80
Variance (20) blank
Highlight the 2 columns and go into Source Data Series - rows.
Draw Graph (it has 3 bars and 3 legends)
Highlite and right mouse click over Variance bar to make the color same as background and remove outline. Now the bar is invisible and Variance (20) shows up in the legend.
For a changing Variance you might try
=CONCATENATE("Variance (",F3,")") where F3 is the variance value and 3A is the variance info cell
