I have a list of buildings and room numbers and wish to extract the building from the cells.

In column A I have
Bu 1123
Qul 1123
etc. The room number always consists of four figures, preceded by a space, the building might have one, two, three or more characters/figures.

I want to have Bu or Qul or whatever in column B. I know I want to get all the characters on the left before the space, but can't for the life of me remember how to do it.

Thanx for any help

Carol, Berlin :)

Hi!

Try =left(a1;(find(" ";a1)-1)

Note - my settings require ; as separator, other settings require ,.

Left - get characters from left specified by a number

Find - finds the starting number of a text witin a text.

Brilliant, just what I wanted. Thanx a million. I had to translate it into German and am now grinning like mad at the result.

All the best,

Carol, Berlin :)

Thank you for the star.

All the software and books I use, are in english. Then it's easyer to get help/find the relevant information. Since I'm Norwegian, we have even less sites/books in our own language;-)
