To cut a long story short, Excel was freezing at startup all of a sudden for no apparent reason. It would start normally, just once, immediately after a reboot. I deleted the excel10.xlb file and that "cured" the problem. If that file is missing excel re-creates it on startup.

Assuming the xlb file had corrupted somehow I deleted the new xlb file and restored a copy of it from a backup made at a time when Excel was working normally. Excel failed to start. I tried several older backups, all with the same result.

I guess now I will have to remember that when old spreadsheets fail I will have to remember what add-ins to re-enable etc.

If anyone has any ideas as to why restoring the xlb file excel10.xlb from backup didn't work or even better can tell me some way I can restore excel to the way I had it, that would be great.

I tried repairing, that made no difference. Deleting the excel10.xlb file worked fine and I have had no problems since. I have had to re-enable a couple of add-ins though.

To repeat my question (and thanks for the interest guys).

Why did I have to let excel re-create a new excel10.xlb file? I can understand it got corrupted. But I restored it from a backup made when all was well and that didn't work!

BTW This is kind of academic now. Unless it helps someone else. Deleting excel10.xlb worked - I just lost all my add-ins etc. No big deal.

After restoring the copy of XLB, have you tried to just open the xlb file itself; then close Excel and open again to see if XLB took effect? I would open the XLB from the explorer window.
