i am trying to set up an inventory management system. is there a function or formula that will add value to a cell when a barcode is scanned?

Yes, but..

At the simplest level, computers see barcode scanners the same way they see a keyboard.

So, activate a cell in Excel, scan a barcode and whatever information is encoded in the barcode goes into the cell.

You really don't want to do that because it's a great way to create a horrible mess very quickly.
