Excel - File Opened by another user...read only

I have a strange error. One of my users opens an Excel spreadsheet from a server share. Another user then opens the same file, The 2nd user should receive a message that the file is opened by another and if they want to open it read only. The problem is that this does not happen and data from the spreadsheet is getting lost.
Anyone have any ideas?

In Excel 2007, check out Save As / Tools / Properties / Sharing.

Also if the file is set to be read only in the operating system then you won't get the prompt and it will open read only.

I found out what it was, it was a DFS issue in which the share was setup to random target and one user was opening it on one server and the other user on a different server. It since has been corrected.
