I have a very simple file containing a combination of date and text fields in a columnar format:

Log date, Date received, Note, etc

I am attempting to use the Autofilter function but once I select it and select a field to filter, I am getting the error "Fixed objects will move". Can someone tell me what this means?

I think I've narrowed it down to a problem with a field in the log date column. I think this because whenever I do a click on the dividing line between columns (on the row bar) to do a autowidth of the column that field thinks it has something greated the 256 characters. It expands across the page.

Any suggestion on how to find the data that is causing teh problem?
Somehow a user has inserted something into the log date field that seems to be causing when attempting to use any filtering.

Do you have objects on the page? This generally refers to textboxes or other objects created with the drawing toolbar.

If you think there are no objects, double-check. Go to like 25% view, and hit Edit-Go to-Special-Objects and see if anything is selected. Do this especially if you got the file from someone else.

Anyway, the only thing I find with that error is an old (1999) post by someone who never got any help with it. Yuk.

VBA Coders, please help:

Not seen the error before but logically speaking, Anne is right - there is almost certainly an "object" like a textbox or something which has its "Move & Size" property set to "Locked". If this object is on a row that will be filtered, the row will be hidden and this "fixed object" will HAVE to move. Having said that, I can't replicate the problem......

Anne and Jeoff,

Thanks for your suggestions. There was indeed an embedded object in the file that was not obvious.
