When I double click an excel file in explorer it take more than 4 mins to open if it open at all and may also freeze. However if I open Excel first then open the file from within it the file opens ok. I reinstall Office 2003 and get the same result. Any suggestions

This suggests that Excel is looking for something and waiting until it times out. Are these xls files created from a template that has now been relocated or removed?

Do you have an over-active AV that is trying to scan everything before it opens.

Finally, do you have a locally installed printer driver set as the Windows Default printer? If you have a network printer, is Excel having problems finding it?
