THis is so weird. Every since getting vista, I cannot format dates in excel 2002. I am opening excel docs that I created on my xp machine and when I type in 0201 (used to inupt 02/01/2008) but now is entering 7/19/1900.

I have my regional settings set to English (US) and the date in excel is setup to the same.

This is brand new to this vista machine. Have latest sps on excel.

Sorry, but you are either remembering incorrectly or you had a macro running on your old machine.

Entering 0201 into a date field in Excel has always equated to the 201st day after 1/1/1900 (which is 7/19) by default.

You can enter 02/01 (or 02-01) and it will default to Feb 2 2008, but you must use some delimiter to make Excel understand what you're trying to do.

For information on how Excel handles dates and times, see faq68-5827.

I don't have any macros running. It happens on any NEW spreadsheet I create as well.

Allow me to repeat myself.

What you describe is normal behavior!

Typing 0201 into an empty cell returns 7/19/1900. It does not return 02/01/2008. That is how Excel does and has worked.

That's the way it worked in Excel 2003, 2002(XP), 2000, 97 etc.

Tip: If you type in "02/01" (without the quotes), Excel will return a date of Feb 1 2008 whether or not you have already formatted the cell as date.

Just to back John up.

What you are seeing is the default behaviour of excel in all versions.

There is no default way to enter 0201 and have it recognised as a date

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.
