Ok, I have a row with say
A1 = Pears
B1 = Oranges
C1 = Pears
D1 = Oranges

I want to count how many times it says "Pears" or "Apples", simple me thinks.

So, I'm in Cell E1, the HELP function says: =COUNTIF(A1:D1,"Pears"), BUT it doesn't work, what on earth am I doing wrong?

HELP!

Hi!
=CountIf(A1:D1,"Pears")
should be
=CountIf(A1:D1;"Pears")
(Semicolumn iso column.
That works for me.

Might be worth stating what version of excel this works for (as for example in 2002 SP3 which I'm running), as the original posters formula would work whereas the posted solution does not.

Use of comma vs semicolon is a regional thing.

In the US we use commas as separators in formulas.

Much of Europe use semicolons.
