I have a spread sheet that opens cells from another spreadsheet...so the formula starts with = ='C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\[Accounts Payable.xls]Active'!$B$1

Is there any way to get rid of the 'C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents so I can move both files to any directory I want without having to change all my formulas?

Try this :
Open "Accounts Payable.xls" along with the main file.
When both files are in memory you will not see the long path. Now Save-As each file to a new directory.
