Excel cells not updating automatically

I must be missing something very basic. Here goes. Excel 97.

I have a formula about as simple as they get; =d5*d6

The problem is that it won't update the final calculation field until I click in the field where the formula result is supposed to go then click on the = by the formula window and then click Ok. It won't update the field just by changing the numbers in the reference fields.

I've worked with Excel 97 for years and have never run across this. I did not setup this particular spreadsheet myself. There are eleven sheets and it does a lot of referencing from one sheet to another. I did find a couple of circular references but fixing them didn't seem to take care of the problem.

Any ideas?

Check Tools, Options, Calculation Tab. Make sure Automatic, not Manual, is selected. Also, make sure update remote references is checked as a bit of foresight.
