I would like to know if it is possible to protect an individual cell or column in excel? Basically, i would like for others to be able to enter figures in certain columns but i do not want anyone to alter the formulas in other cells. I tried doing Format = protect but that just didn't work. ANy help is appreciated. thanks in advance! A.C.

After formating and protecting the cells, you need to protect the sheet.

Goto: Tools/Protection/Protect Sheet.
Enter a password if you want.
Choose how you want to protect the cells (Allow/disallow users to select protected cells etc.....)

Click OK

To Unprotect:
Goto: Tools/Protection/Unprotect Sheet.
Enter the password if you set one.

Done

However, BEFORE you turn on Sheet Protection, you must UNLOCK the cells that you wish to allow users to change. Format/Cells - Protection Tab.

Hi Acowaz,

In Excel, all cells are formatted with protection set to ON by default. All that's needed to activate the protection is to protect the worksheet, via Tools|Protection|Protect Sheet, leaving all of the protection options checked. You can use a password if you want.

Once you activate the protection with the 'Contents' option checked, users won't be able to edit any of the cells. From your request probably don't want to do that. So, before protecting the worksheet, use Format|Cells|Protection and uncheck the 'Locked' option for all cells that you want the users to be able to update. Depending on your worksheet's layout, you might find it quickest to unlock all cells on the worksheet, then lock only the ones that need to be protected.

Cheers
