Excel cell character limits

Using Office '97
Can anyone tell me what the character limit for one cell is?

If typing in a cell we can enter upwards of 800 characters -all caps - with no spaces. This can be saved and the file reopened. When exporting data from Access '97 or Crystal v8, we can only seem to convert around '280' characters.
Is this an Excel problem, or is it related to the applications we are exporting data from?

This sounds like an issue of the data or program that you are exporting from. I have not heard of cell limits in excel and have not run accross any problems. The limitations are usually caused by the program that is exporting the data.
