New to excel and trying to do something simple. Don't know VBA, so I would like to do with a formula. For example. If cell A3 has text, then B3 can have a number. If A3 is deleted, then B3 = 0.

A3 = Test and B3 = 200 (which was entered earlier)
Delete "Test" from A3 and make B3 be 0 instead of 200.

Hi,

"If cell A3 has text, then B3 can have a number. If A3 is deleted, then B3 = 0"
[tt]
=if(A3="",0,B3)
or
=if(A3<>"",B3,0)

[/tt]

Right.

The short answer to the original question is:

No, a formula in a cell cannot change the value in another cell.

Thanks for the short answer. I'll look at doing it another way. And also, thanks for the quick response!

If that is waht you really meant, you might want to post in Forum707.

The following comment, very obvoiusly, is not intended to refer to my reply. But you have posted on Tek-Tips 40 times since Jan 25, 2001, and replied 22 times and even have received a STAR for a valuable post. However, you yourself have never responded to thank anyone, "[blue]for this valuable post[/blue]" These little pink stars, not only act as a signal for other Tek-Tip members, looking for valuable information, but they also reflect on the giver of such as a greatful recipient.

In regards to not thanking anyone, I truely do apologize! As you can tell from my history, I seldom use this site (40 times in 7 years). I did go back and look at the 22 replies and on all but about 4, I said "Thanks" many times in the replies. Believe it or not, I didn't even know about the airhead for not learning more about the etiquites of this site.

I see now, Skip, that you actually have to click on the pink star at the end to of each post. I honestly am sorry and I wil actually try to go back to all my previous posts and make amends.

I'm really a nice guy, just slow sometimes, but thanks for pointing this out. I must seem like a real jerk to others.
