I have a column of measurements in centimeters that I need to convert to inches. 1 cm equals 0.3937 inches.

how do I change apply numeric formula to itself in the same cell?

For example if I hae the value 2 in D1 (which then has to be applied to all numbers in a column), how do I convert this value to 0.3937

thanks

A formula in a cell cannot refer to the value that [!]USED TO BE[/!] in the same cell. By the time you enter a formula into the cell you've erased the value that was there.

You can place a formula in a different column. For example, in E1 you could type =D1*0.3937, then fill that formula down the column. You can then Copy column E, Paste Special > Values then delete column D, so the values in column E effectively replace those that were in column D.

If you don't want to put a formula in a different cell, your only option is to use a macro (VBA). If you wish to go that route, please post a new thread in forum707.

famtek,

to convert values in cells start off by typing the conversion factor into an empty cell ( 0.3937 ), then copy that cell ( menu command Edit/Copy ) and then select all the cells that you wish to convert and do menu command Edit/Paste Special/ and select the Multiply option before pressing OK. Done.

Cheers, Glenn.

A column for centimeters.

A column for inches.
