Excel Autoformat

When formatting a range with Autoformat why would the format not "take" for the range? Example: Formatting a range as Accounting 2 puts $ signs in each cell rather than in cells in the first and last row of the range as the format should.
All cells are formatted as General and style is Normal before applying Autoformat
