Excel Auto Calculate not saving

I've a persistant problem on just a few Windows NT 4.0/Office 97 workstations: Excel auto calculate is deselected. I select it (Tools - Options) on each worksheet in the workbook and Save that workbook. When I open the workbook again ... auto calculate is not selected. In short, the 'Save' of auto calculate is only good as long as that workbook (any workbook) is open. This is driving me crazy!
