Hi guys! My first post here :) Have recently discovered this forum and I find it really useful!

Scenario:
One user that has an excel document that he uses as a "template", when writing invoices. The strange thing is that the file itself isn't big at all, but as soon as he fills in a single cell in the document, a temp file of up to 30mb is created and it continues to grow as he keeps on writing!?

When you work in a file, Microsoft Excel saves the file with a temporary file name (.tmp file extension) and places this file in the same directory as the original file. When you save the file, the original file is then deleted and the temporary file is renamed with the original file name. Therefore, the amount of free disk space on the drive must be greater than twice the file size being saved.

For example, if you open a 710-kilobyte (KB) workbook, and you make changes that add 10kb to the file size and save the workbook the disk must have over 720kb x 2 or more than 1.44mb of space for Excel to work with this file.

The fact that the temp file is 30MB should not worry you, because it should be deleted as soon as you have finished working on the file and you have saved it.

A couple of other notes for you however:

If this save process is interrupted, your file may not be saved properly or you may find one or more temporary files in the folder where you tried to save your file. In addition, you may receive one of several alert or error messages.

"Cannot access read-only document <file name>"
"Disk is full"
"Document not saved," or "Document not completely saved"
"Document not saved. Any previously saved copy has been deleted"

I'm well aware of that, the thing is that when it keeps on increasing the size of the temp file the HD can't keep up and the computer becomes slow and unresponsive since it's busy writing the large temp file. It's a fairly new computer.
Problem solved! When he tried an older version of the file it works fine, so i just deleted the bad one.
Thanx anyway!
