Excel and Decimal placing Errors

If any one could help me on this it would be great. when I open a blank Workbook and type in a number, say 1, it automatically appears, when I come out of the cell as 0.01?? I have tried to change the style of this by using the Format dropdown but to no avail. Can any one suggest any possible reasons and advice on how to stop this? Many thanks
