Excel Addin not opening

If I save a file as an Addin and place it in the XLSTART diretory it should open when Excel loads, shouldn't it?
But it doesn't, it adds my file as a template to File|New|General
If I just open the file from Explorer, it opens as an AddIn and the macros fire etc.

I'm thinking I've missed something really obvious here.
Any thoughts?

I assume you have custom functions in an .xla workbook,

if so save your workbook as an .XLA to the AddIns folder in your "Application data\microsoft" path,...(the AddIns folder on your machine might reside in a different path)

then from excel, goto tools>Add-ins>, then browse the path to your custom functions workbook, after selected it should show up in the list of selectable addins.
