Excel Add-In does't load...

If I save a file as an Addin and place it in the XLSTART diretory it should open when Excel loads, shouldn't it?
But it doesn't, it adds my file as a template to File|New|General
If I just open the file from Explorer, it opens as an AddIn and the macros fire etc.

I'm thinking I've missed something really obvious here.
Any thoughts?

When you save your add-in as a .xla (by selecting that file type from the save as dialog) Excel will automatically save it in its add-in folder (location isn't immediately obvious). Then the add-in will appear in the tools-addins selection list, and you can check this add-in on the list so that it will automatically load when Excel is started.
