Excel 97 "minimised"

When I open Excel 97 on my laptop (800x600) all looks well. When I drag the window to my monitor (1024x768) then the whole window fits to the screen but the workbook inside only fills about 3/4 of the window. What is happening? Maximising and minimising doesn't help, any ideas?
