On one of the workstations I administer, when the user clicks on an Excel file, Excel opens and displays the message, "SOMEFILE.doc: file format is not valid." We click on OK, then it opens the Excel file clicked on originally and everything is fine. It displays this message two times for the same two differenct Word files no matter what Excel file is opened or what directory we are in. It does NOT do this when I am logged in as an admin. Using NT 4.0 and Office 97 on the workstation. Is there a configuration problem with Excel or the registry that it always tries to open these two WORD files all the time? This is a machine where NT and Office have been just freshly installed.

They're probably in the XLSTART folder. Why don't you find those two files and move them??

Second: Is there a personal.xls file in the XLSTART folder that is somehow linked to these docs? Clearing out the XLSTART folder should find that out for you too.
