Help!! We've recently upgraded our desktop OS to 2000 pro. Some users stayed with office 97 and some were upgraded to office 2000 SBE. We have a few "power" users that need to save Excel files into a dBaseIII format. Since the OS upgrade, users have been unable to save these type of excel files to the network in either version of office. They'll open an excel file that's saved on the network, make changes and click save as and change the type to dBaseIII, after which an error comes up. This error says something to the effect of "the file that you're trying to save is read only or the server it's on is not responding" (blah, blah, blah). Both of which are not true. The server is a novell 3.12 and desktops are windows 2000 pro. We've tried uninstalling/reinstalling office which does nothing. Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been able to find extremely useful info via Tek-Tips. I'm hoping that my fellow computer compadres can come through!! Thanks

Hi,

I know that Office 2000 and XP had the ability to save/import DBase III and 4 files removed from the standard install as Microsoft decreed them legacy technology but don't understand why the problem still exists under your machines running 97.

Go to and ensure that you can get the latest dBase ISAM import filters for your file.
If you can't get it to work manually though, try connecting via ODBC which should still work - this will require a bit more work in getting it setup though. Make sure that your office installations are fully service packed (that means SR-2b for 97 and SR-3 for 2000 or SR-1 if you use Outlook to avoid the horrendous security update).
