i am trying to create a document in Excel 2010. I am trying to protect the sheet without success. Both the protect the sheet and the protect the workbook are greyed out. If I go back to the File tab, under permissions, it is set up for anyone to be able to make changes, but the only option that is NOT greyed out, is the option to restrict permission by people. I dont believe i have this password protected anyplace. I am the only one that has access to this file, not networked etc. I have all administrative rights, etc. this is starting to drive me up a wall.... any thoughts?

Is the workbook shared? Many feature are limited, if so. Check HELP.

As a matter of fact it was shared. not sure how that happened, but i have "unshared" it. However I am still unable to protect the sheet. It is muted out on the review tab. If i go to the file tab info permissions protect workbook, the protect sheet is no longer muted... but pressing it has no know effect. the sheet is not protected, nor is the sheet protect tab under review.. is still muted.

Save, close, reopen.

Is it saved in SharePoint? That, too could be a problem.

i will check..but i havent done anything with sharepoint ..ever

no.. i have found no connections that have ever been made to connect this or save it to sharepoint.

And did you reopen the workbook?

Did you try rebooting?

yes.. i have rebooted.. opened and closed the workbook... cant find anything that will let me protect this sheet. i give up.. i am going to redo the sheet from scratch. But i do appreciate the help.. must just be a strange reason.
