have a user that emails excel spreadsheets to many people.
these spreadsheets have several photos.

they can be up to 6 or 7 meg.
I do a compression on the document and it doesnt do anything. no error message, but just doesnt change the size.

meanwhile she can email it to others who have 2007 or 2003 excel and it compresses down fine.

I cant seem to find any difference in the settings in excel between the systems.

what could keep compression from working on Excel 2007?

Haven't got Excel 2007 to hand at the moment and i know you were looking for an excel answer, but the real issue is the size of the photos they have inserted into the excel document.

Have they tried resizing the photos BEFORE they are inserted into the document ? If they do screenshots they will be BMP and really large.

Resizing is the best way there, use Powertoys if on XP, Vista has several free tools to resize files from my computer so they don't need to save each one indivdually in a graphics package. Batch conversions.

Plus because they are emailing the document, the size of the attachment will be a lot less if there picture sizes are reduced meaning if you have an exchange server it will do less work and less of a resource on your network.

User education is far better in the long run!

we get the pictures from our Mac guy, and getting him to resize them just isnt an option.

I opened this excel spreadsheet in excel 2007, select a picture, select compress, options, resolution is web, and no change.

do the same on different PC with excel 2003, and it drops from 5.66 meg to 69KB.

is this a 2007 issue?

cause I thought I had compressed one on mine (2007 excel) but I just did the same one that dropped to 69KB on 2003 excel stayed at 5.66 meg when compressed in excel 2007 on my PC.

If you create a new workbook in 2007, insert a pic (using Insert tab on Ribbon), save as xlsx, and compress, does it work then?
