Sample Cell data ALL IN ONE CELL WITH Word wrap:

SUE THOMAS
234 EXCEL ST
WINTER SPRINGS, FL 32789

I need to separate it into

Name(Column) Street(Column) City (Column) STATE AND ZIP

any ideas - i can't find the symbol for alt enter to do a delimited file

Highlight your text. Go to Data, Text to Column. In step 1 Choose Delimited. In Step 2, put a checkmark beside Other and click in the box beside Other. Hold the ALT Key and on your Numeric Keypad type 010. Click Net and then Finish

Ok, I need to learn to read. One of my problems since the beginning.

In Excel 2007, Text to columns is under the Data tab (er r r.... Ribbon)

Thanks for the info but it won't let me enter 010 in the other box with holding the ALT Key or not? Any idea why not?

Yes it did work. I thought I had to visually see the 010 but I just tried it without the numbers in the box. Thank you so much.!!!

I tried to follow the above directions and the process did not work. The information was not broken up into columns. I have excell 97 is that the reason? I entered the address in 1 cell, enabled word wrap, adjusted column width, then tried to follow the above ditections. I also don't know why <alt enter> is the delimiter. Does excell 2007 add it to a text cell with word wrap? If you have time, I would like to stop obsessing over this.

Thanks
Tom

The address is actually entered using alt/enter. That is, type name; alt/enter; type address; alt/enter; type city; alt/enter... etc. The you use the process above.

[Alt] + [Enter] forces a return within the cell, rather than exiting the cell.

True, you can usually just turn on word wrapping and adjust the width to get the desired effect, but [Alt] + [Enter] ensures that the line breaks are where you want them regardless of column width.

Just to say you can copy the character from the source data (Ctrl-C) and paste it )Ctrl-v) into the box beside "Other" in text to columns. That helps if you don't know what the character code is.

Gavona,

Really great idea. Please don't forget, you might take other extraneous blank and such with the copy command.
