I have a user with several folders in her my documents folder. When she clicks on the open toolbar icon it takes her to the first file in her my documents folder skipping her folders. She then has to scroll back to see the folders she has created. Is there a way to change this behavior in excel. Her OS is Windows XP Pro SP2. Her default file locations is correct c:\doc & set\user\my doc

Hi,

You mention two default file locations - c:\doc & set\user\my doc.

Excel supports ONE default file location and ONE alternate startup location.

The default file location determines the default working folder, whilst the alternate startup location specifies a folder in which there are files that Excel is to open automatically whenever it starts.

So, to change the folder that is first seen on the File|Open dialog box, change the default file location to the required folder.

Cheers

Personally I tend to leave the settings as they are and then create a shortcut to whatever set of folders I'm trying to access the most at the time. Drop the shortcut in to where Excel points to initially and then just use it when you hit File / Open. name the shortcut 1 - Blah Blah Blah, or z - Blah Blah Blah and it will fall to the start/end respectively depending on preference.

I think the problem being highlighted here is that in the dialog box, the first file of the expected type is preselected.

If this file is the only one in a large group of folders, you need to use the scrollbars to see the folders you want to use.

Is this a correct understanding, goingcrazy?

If so, welcome to the club. It bugs the hell out of me and I don't know how to change it either!
