Excel 2000 and Pivot Tables

I have created a simple database (5 fields and 38 records) in which I have then used the Pivot Table Wizard to create a Pivot Table and Pivot Chart.

I have published the PivotTable to the Web, and can successfully interact with it.

The problem occurs when I attempt to import the pivot.htm document back into Excel 2000. I get the error “Unable to connect to data” as the results of the Pivot Table. I attempted to use the Drag and Drop method to import the pivot.htm file from a folder on the desktop. (I have used this method with other HTML documents with no difficulties.)

When I attempt to open the document using Excel’s open feature, the document opens up in FrontPage – and works fine. My problem is that the requirement from the user is that the document needs to be able to be manipulated in Excel.

Can anyone help? I have installed SP-2 with no improvement.

It sounds as though Excel 2000 is trying to refresh the data in the pivot table, and cannot access the source of the data when trying.

I have never come across this before with web based html sheets, occasionally with data taken from a live database when the connection is lost....

Have you tried to take the same document into Excel 97 (assuming you have access to a copy). Does it still work there, or do you get the same error? If you get the same error, it may be worth checking there is not a macro doing something in the background. If you do not, still check for macro's in case Excel 2000 is trying to autorun one on download.

If there are no macro's, and you don't get the error with Excel 97, it may be one of Mr. Gates' wonderful undocumented features!!
