Please forgive this newbie question...
I'm having trouble seeing just exactly what MSXML 4 (formerly the MS XML Parser) actually is. Is this a separate program that you might independently launch from the Programs menu, or is it actually just sort of plug-in for IE that allows it to interpret xml documents? Or something else again? If I downloaded IE 6.0, would MSXML be part of the download?

You see what I'm getting at.... I having trouble orienting myself with what MSXML 4 is, how it fits with everything else, what should I do with it once I download it, etc.

All comments and advice much appreciated.

Installing it seems to update your entire system - enabling anything which uses an MSXML parse to use that version, maybe not your browser [?] but certainly your IIS Server.

MSXML is just the parser you were talking about. It is installed as a DLL (msxml4.dll) in your System directory and contains, besides the parser, schema processing capabilities and XSLT abilities.
Essentially, you shouldn't see anything different after installing. Wait... actually, you should see some enhanchements added by the new version, in processing capabilities of the XML, as mentioned above.

Theoretically, any impact that it has should be a good one. Since it works on XML files, which are essentially text files, and those files have usually no reference to a specific processing unit (like: use MSXML to parse this file, or something like that), there is no problem installing and using it.
