Hi,
What is the exact difference between approximate and generic position modes?

Can you please explain me in detail?

As far as our knowledge is conserned when we pass an alternate key
Approximate mode:It gives from the starting record(which has the alt-key)to the record which is at the physical end of the file. That means it also gives those records which dont have the alt-key we've passed...is that true?

Generic mode:It gives only those group of records which has the alt-key.

Cal yu please clarify me on my understanding with an example???

Thanku,
Lafalafa

I have never heard of any such thing either.

Sound like something you will need to take up with your compiler vendor.

What implementation of Cobol are you using?

Code what you mean,
and mean what you code!
But by all means post your code!

Are you trying to use indexes to read records from a file?

Are you trying to do relative positioning or find a range of groups of records?

I have read manuals of different kinds of cobol but never encountered such thing as approximate and generic position modes. Maybe this is a new thing????

I think he means generic key and fully specified key. But maybe not...?

I also await clarification. Maybe there is something new...
