MS EventID 34320 error - bengine.exe memory allocation problem - in EventViewer during backup , followed by job failures.
Following morning when I check the B.E. Job Engine , it is stopped.
This is a new install of Backup Exec 9.0 on NT4.0 sp6a which worked fine for a couple of weeks.
Initally got one instance of "Event ID 4097" Dr Watson errors which also stopped job engine - Veritas website advised reapplication of latest MDAC , did this. Now 2 days late I get above 34320 error which is then followed by 4097 error.

Sorry , omitted to Say Backup Exec 9.0 Ver 4367

Bengine.exe is the BE (Backup exec) Job engine's executable file. This service is pretty much responsible for the process of streaming the data to tape etc.

Firstly I would upgrade to 9.0 rev. 4454 from their website (no new licenses needed).

If the Dr Watson happens again check the drwtsn32.log and have a look at the stack back trace, might be some clue there. Also what are you backing up ie. dont back up Exchange 2000's "M" drive, are you running Virus scanner > stop it and see what happens

What's the desription of ID 4097 ?

34320... Catalog server (C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\bengine.exe) memory allocation failed.
d:\be\tybee\4367r\becat\server\dll\..\catworkerthread.cpp(409)
followed by
4097 ...The application, , generated an application error The error occurred on 6/21/2003 @ 1:50:31.316
The exception generated was c0000005 at address 7800cb6a (set_sbh_threshold)

The 4097 error details can be found at However the 4097 error was preceded his time by the 34320 error so ..

I will have a look at upgrading to 4454. Its not an exchange prob - not backing up Exc yet .. and A.V doesn't seem to be the problem.

It could to be a memory issue [error msg implies mem] - Veritas doco states Virtual RAM should be st to 20Mb higher than MS advise. I have tried this and will wait & see.

Dr watsons can be hard to troubleshoot, especially if the stackback trace refers to the function as <no symbols>, might be an idea to reapply the service pack

Just a thought

Reapplied SP1 initally ( this was MDAC reapplication ) - and since then reset Virtual RAM.. Now I am back to getting Dr Watson & 4097 error msg and jobengine stopping.
May have to try the 4454 upgrade unless somebody out there has a solution.
