Every time I connect to my RH 9 server with ssh, it needs a long time to prompt me enter the password after I entered the login name. After that I have checked the /var/log/message, it has the following message recorded:

Oct 2 17:38:51 gateway sshd(pam_unix)[16350]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=NODEVssh ruser= rhost=recorder02 user=root

Does anyone know what's the problem and how to solve it?

Thanks.

You are SSHing into the box from ROOT at your other machine perhaps ( as per uid=0 ) ?

<theory>IF so it's probably trying to check for some kind of key and when it discovers the key is no good, then prompts you for a password. </theory>

Hi

remove the file /root/.ssh/known_hosts file. this file contains the authentication key. remove the file from both the sides (the machine to which u want to ssh and the machine from which u want to ssh)
and try again ssh . this time it should work fastly.
Also there may be lag in your connection. i.e. Internet speed.
