Hi, Im sure someone will have a quick fix for me here. I recently tried to uninstall my norton 2002 on my win 2000 pro pc. When going into add/remove programs it gave me an error message stating some elements were missing and could not uninstall. Therefor being the moron that i am, I manually deleted the folder (shift+Del+enter). Then suddenly my system shut down and restarted.
Now, everytime i Statrtup my system all loads up then a small pop up appears, Windows installer for norton, gives me an error message that some files are missing then reboots by its self.
Here's what ive tried so far. Safe mode> still does the same thing except i can browse hd a bit and enter regedit. Only after I click 'ok' on the error message does it reboot. This gave me time to find all 'norton' entries in the registry and delete them. I rebooted, same thing.
If only I can find the root of what and why windows is trying to install norton again I might be able to fix this.
>>What happenend here? Was I infected? How can I fix this? Please help ,me, i'd like to get this solved today (yah know, being sunday and all!)
Thanks for your help

you could always try reinstalling the program and then uninstalling it again to see if it clears it up. have you gone into the registry to try and remove any entries in the Run and RunOnce folders?

Nahh I cant reinstall the program because it always restarts. It wouldn't even give me a chance to. i did rtemove all in registry in run, twice, once in local system and other in current user. I removed all that was there, although i didn't even see the program in question. Ill look through the runonce though right now, we'll see if it does it...
thanks,
If anyone has any other ideas please let me know!

Check your boot.ini file, there might be a reference to norton there. If not check autoexec.bat, not needed in 2000 or xp, but sometimes things get put there.

Ok well nothing in the registry> runOnce folder. still doing it! In safe mode it doesnt do it until i open IE or any other app. Hmmm. I'm currently checking the boot.ini and the autoexec.bat so we'll see. Nope, nothin there. I did find a file in my c directory that i never seen before, the autoexec.nai, opened it in wordpad and it said something about norton so i deleted it as well. im still perplexed here if there are any other suggestions please let me knoW!

hello

do u remember msconfig for win98 there is one utility called startup cpl. You can configure what programs should run at start up, i am taking a wild guess that norton must be checking your memory, bootsector etc during startup it does not find any so it is trying to load. If u need startup CPL just let me know.

All the Best

Rocky

Ive seen this before, a pain to resolve, you are doing all the right things, eventually one will work.

What worked for me...

Try stopping the service (if it gives you a chance). search for services (in Winnt\system32) and disable the norton option in there.
