General Question -

When you go to the restore option, why does ArcServe keep a list of every backup tape you have ever used? And, if your sure you will never use some of those tapes listed, is it possible to remove them? If so, would it mess anything up?

Thanks in advance!! [sig][/sig]

I was wondering if you were ever able to find an answer to this thread .. I am having the same issue and would like to find some way to prune these out of the database listing ????

When you erase a tape, be sure to use the "quick erase-destroy label" selection. Arcserve/ASO keeps the 4 digit id number in it's database, formating a tape or erasing in in this manner deletes the previous reference. That's why when you set "Over write same tape name" in the backup option, you see it actually re-format the tape, and a notation "Database pruned" with any jobs on the previous tape ID. Run a quick test backup...then re-run it overwriteing the tape...you'll see what I mean.

Now, you have to do this on the same server you backed up on....

Has anyone checked their Arcserve Server Admin program and made sure that the database pruning is setup ? The default is to keep 30 days of backup catalogs and that's what we use but you can set it for however many days you need to keep. You can always merge tape listings back in database as you need them.

When it's setup, you shoud see a pruning job in your Job Status window and it should be scheduled at least 1 hour before you backup starts.

Yes I am pruning the database or so it says in the log but this is not taking affecting the tape media listing on the session restore ... I use a 2 different sets of tapes (20 each) to rotate through and the so erasing the or formating the to get rid of the id will not fix the problem either ...

Is it possible that although the admin is set up to prune and there is a entry showing the job was run, that in fact the pruning job is not actually running. My database seems to be getting really large ...

Your database size would depend on your prune setting (i.e 30 days) and the size of your catalogs. Many little files in a listing will fill up a catalog database a lot more then only one big one, right ?
