Does anyone have experience with an organization called IEEE Computer Society? (computer.org)

I received materials from them and since I don't remember requesting it....I wanted to check with the experts here at Tek-tips to see if anyone has had good and/or bad experiences with them as they offer free online training after you "join."

If you know of someplace on the web (other than their own website) that I can check them out - that would help also.

IEEE is a very highly regarded institution. They have chapters in several countries. My only experience with them was from when they pestered me to join as a student member years ago. Im not really one for professional bodies and that sort of thing, but I'd be very surprised if it didn't work out for you.

Sure, the IEEE is very respected. They lean towards the academic side of computing, rather than the corporate world. Another good one is the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM --
Typically, what you read in the ACM journals is what you end up working with 3-5 years later. So it's good to read them just for background information.

Yeah, and the ACM has APL on their web page. Do you know anybody who programs in APL? Maybe it's used but I have never seen it.

Guess they missed the 3-5 year timeline on that language.

No, that page is on the ACM website. Do you know anybody that uses it? It says for this, for that, and it is used by statisticians, yadda, yadda, yadda. But have ya ever seen a job for an APL programmer?!?

Yes, actually I have seen a few jobs for APL programmers...a couple of the first ten hits I saw on google (when I searched for apl programming jobs) were for APL programming jobs...

And perhaps if more people learned it it would be used more widely, maybe the reason the ACM has informaiton on it is because sleective people have decided it is a good language with a lot of solid uses, if only people would learn it and suggest it for their next project instead of using something less appropriate.

Then again, back in the early C days I am sure they said the same thing, and it never went anywhere...

The never-completed website:

Oh, and yes the IEE is a respected institution, I've been a memeber for a couple years and they seem to be increasing the amount of member services. I actually get several of their periodicals and it's funny to hear friends talking about "new" technologies that I started talking about over a year ago that have just hit more mainstream media.

Sorry, got side-tracked, or I wouldn't have double-posted :)
