what is the command that has the same function as event viewer in NT. i'm encountering problems with my server and i want to find it out in the logs. it would be better if u could give the commands to invoke both in the shell prompt and from the desktop cause some of the servers are text-based and some are graphical.

Red Hat 7.3

thanks a lot,

thanks marsd but i need something like errpt (error reporting tool) in AIX. is there exist?

Yes, /var/log/warn or /var/log/messages, depending on
your syslog conf.
I'm not familiar with aix's toolset..If you want a
tool that can report on specific issues there are
doubtless perl and c tools all over the place for log file parsing and pretty printing.
I'd do a search for logwatcher or logparser at sourceforge
and freshmeat and see if anything interesting pops up.
FWIW:
I always write a trivial menu script to view log file
entries on boxes I admin using less, tail, and a shell menu
or dialog.

errpt is very specific AIX and you wont find anything like it here.
Everything should be in the syslogs though.
/var/log/messages etc.
