Event Notification!

I have just installed NNM ver 6.41 with all of the patches, I am rather new to configuring and working with NNM and wanted to setup Event Notification for when my routers go down,etc I have had a hard time finding software to do this without it costing an arm and a leg. is there anyone that is using a free script or something that wouldn't mind explaining it to me, I'm not a programer and I know little about scripts! I can catch on quick just need help getting started.
