About a week a and a half ago my cdrom stopped working on my 3 month old toshiba laptop. The drive still plays dvds but will not read cd's(originals and burnt).Nor will it copy to or from cd.I've tried cleaning the lens, restoring to a date before the fault appeared deleting/re-installing the drive and none of that has worked. I've noticed that every time I try and run a cd an error is logged in System Tools\event viewer\system that says "the device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block" please somebody help me!!! Thanks in advance

As you know most of the enquiries about this error are answered by recommendations to clean the CD or CD Player. One other alternative you can try before you return it to the dealer would be to try this.

To enable/disable DMA mode using the Device Manager

Open Device Manager.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.
Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.
In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:
Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.
Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.

Linney quoted one of my favorite Microsoft KB Titles: "Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - Q310751

It is under Warranty, and a good bet is that they will replace the device. Take it to the dealer.
