I am trying to filter for empty records in a text
field but the particular field doesn't show up in the
field list in formula editor. The field type in the ORACLE 8.1i DB is VARCHAR2
and I am using CR 8.5 connecting via ODBC.
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

take a look at the field using the filed explorer, and make sure the icon in the top right is depressed. What is the field type and length?

Most likely it is a memo field, which makes it unavailable in the formula editor. However, if you manually type in the formula to test for nulls it should work:

Isnull({MemoField}) Software Sales, Training and Support for Macola, Crystal Reports and Goldmine
dgilsdorf@mchsi.com

You are right about the "memo" type field. I tried entering the function manually but I get an error about like this (I am using the German Verison of CR): "this function cannot be used, as it must be evaluated/computed later".
A workaround that did work, is entering the function directly in the SQL statement.
Thanks for your help!
