Eudora in Free mode still connects for ads

I am testing Eudora 5.2 on a few workstations on a network with a mail server (MDaemon). Eudora is configured to connect only to that server, and it is running in Free mode only. However, the network's proxy server records show that Eudora occasionally connects to and presumably to collect ads, which on a dial-up connection is quite wasteful. Is there any way to stop this happening?

Just to clarify - what I mean is that Eudora is operating in Light mode, that is, reduced features and no ads. Although no ads are displayed, Eudora still connects to the addresses mentioned.

My firewall records Eudora connecting to those such sites when running in Paid mode as well - as I say in my Eudora security FAQ in this forum.

Whether the new Eudora 6 fixes this problem remains to be seen.

Tony Lowe at the eudora-win mailing list provided a solution, which seems to work. On each Eudora workstation, add the following lines to the HOSTS file (on WinNT, it's in %windir%\system32\drivers\etc):

127.0.0.1 ads.eudora.com
127.0.0.1 adserver.eudora.com

This has the effect of suppressing any calls to those domains.

Tony,

While I agree with that solution, the trouble is, if the Eudora is configured for paid or lite mode, with no ads, then there is no need to connect to the advertising servers at all.
