It's a decent sniffer.. more of a clone of the "real" sniffer which is sold by NAI. You can find folks on both sides of the camp defending them with religious fever..
Myself.. I use Sniffer by NAI for two reasons.. thats what the clients want and thats the trace files the vendors want to see. If cost is the over riding concern, you wont be unhappy with Etherpeek so long as you learn how to use it. And to fully use ANY sniffer you need to the mechanics of the OSI layers, how packets are constructed, how packets behave, types of packets and so on. It's not for the faint of heart and it's definitly not a silver bullet to solve all your network ills. Used correctly, it can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars wasted on yet more hardware or the incorrect harware. It can give insight to why the database is so damn slow, why your connections keep dropping, possible areas of trouble so you can be the hero with some proactive fix'ing and we ALL like to be the hero !!!!
Just my 2.5 cents
